THE ENGEGÅRD QUARTET FROM NORWAY COME TO THE LION BALLROOM, LEOMINSTER ON SUNDAY 1 OCTOBER AS PART OF THEIR UK TOUR
Arvid Engegård (violin)
Laura Custodio Sabas (violin)
Juliet Jopling (viola)
Jan Clemens Carlsen (cello)
The Lion Ballroom welcomes this superb string quartet for a concert on Sunday
1 October at 3pm. Formed under the midnight sun in Lofoten in 2005, the Engegård Quartet have rapidly become one of Norway’s most sought-after ensembles. Their bold, fresh interpretations of the classical repertoire, combined with a deep attachment to their Scandinavian roots, has attracted international acclaim and inspired some innovative partnerships and programming. The Quartet’s debut CD was praised as ‘breath-taking’ in The Strad, while their second release won Pizzicato magazine’s ‘Supersonic Award’. Recent CD releases include Mozart’s ‘Prussian Quartets’ and the complete string quartets of Schumann. Such is their stature that they have performed with such world-famous musicians as pianists Sir András Schiff and Leif Ove Andsnes.
Their programme is:
Boyce (arr Derek Smith) String Quartet arrangement of Symphony No 4 (première)
Haydn String Quartet in B flat Op 76 No 4 (‘Sunrise’)
Andrew Morris String Quartet Op 40
Beethoven String Quartet in C Op 59 No 3 (‘Razumovsky’)
The concert opens with the première of an arrangement for string quartet of a very brief Symphony by William Boyce, a work of freshness and immediate melodic appeal, which is a prelude to the most genial 4th Quartet from Haydn’s magnificent Op 76 set. There follows a short String Quartet by the well-known Herefordshire composer/pianist and Leominster resident Andrew Morris. The programme ends with the 3rd of Beethoven’s ground-breaking ‘Razumovsky’ Quartets, acknowledged to be one of the greatest of all chamber works.
